Bread and Jam for Frances

by Russell Hoban

For ages 2-6 years

Perhaps your little darling needs just a teensy suggestion to broaden his culinary horizons. Perhaps you are at your wit's end if you hear another request for grilled cheese. Here is an enlightening tale for both of you. Frances wins a permanent place at the table by realizing that there is a world beyond bread and jam. Someone in your house just may take the hint...

Bread and Jam for Frances was definitely a favorite of mine when I was growing up. I've passed the love of Frances on to my own children! Frances provides great lessons because she can be a little bit naughty but always learns from her ways. The lessons in the book are easy for kids to identify with because they identify with them.

Bread and Jam for Frances was one of my favorite books as a child; I would read it over and over and yearn for a really great lunch like one of those badger lunches! (Badger mamas are such good cooks, aren't they?) I love to read it now; Frances has such a lovely way of making everything into a rhythm, and the way her parents gently show her what it would be like to *only* eat bread and jam at every meal; encouraging her without being demanding to open her horizons; is both excellent parenting advice and a great lesson for my kids. My oldest has actually taken the lessons of this book to heart and occasionally tried new things as a result (also, we eat a lot of bread and honey in my house now, and I have a little song to sing to myself as I serve it. It makes me feel better).
