Description:
In its eighth year, Camp Can-Do is the only opportunity of its kind in the area for youth who are visually impaired. Most campers are between the ages of six and 12, and some of them have multiple disabilities. The camp is supported by the Alexander Vision Center at Cook Children's Hospital and the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services -- Division for Blind Services, who help recruit campers and plan camp activities. In addition, this year Camp Can-Do received grant funding from Build-A-BearWorkshop Bear Hugs Foundation and Alcon for scholarships and program support. The camp achieves a one-toone ratio of adults to kids and matches teen volunteers with kids to serve as peer mentors. Volunteers for the camp work differing hours, some choosing to staff the morning equestrian programs and serve as side walkers during horseback riding activities.
