Bill Austin began his gymnastics career in 1961 as a student at the Evanston, Illinois YMCA. He competed in numerous Illinois State YMCA Championships where he became a state champion. He went on to have a very successful high school career at Evanston Township High School. He was a 4 year varsity letter winner and took 2nd place at the Illinois High School State Championships in his senior year. While attending New Mexico Jr. College, he became a National champion on trampoline and runner-up National champion on floor exercise and vaulting. His National championship earned him All-American status. In 1973, he accepted a full scholarship to Houston Baptist University where he became the first gymnast to compete for a 4 year university in Texas. When a back injury forced him to retire from competition in his senior year, he immediately turned his attention to teaching young children. In 1976, he accepted a position as Head Boys Coach at Finch Gymnastics Academy where his boys’ team became the Texas State Champions. One of his gymnasts was selected to the first Jr. National Boys Team.
