Social understanding and the ability to “walk in the shoes” of another person are capabilities that elude many people on the autism spectrum. And what is acting? It is about relating to fellow actors onstage. It is about interpreting a script and reacting to a situation. It is about reading body language and understanding vocal cues, and it is about interpreting and portraying emotions. These are the very skills we all use in our everyday lives as we interact with the world around us. And these are the skills that those on the autistic spectrum find so challenging. Shenanigans, through high-energy games, skits, and improvisational situations, encourages those affected by high-functioning autism and Asperger's to develop and practice these essential social skills in a supportive environment.
