Squirrel Hollow Camp, a remedial summer program of The Bedford School, serves children with academic needs due to learning difficulties. The program, which has been held each summer since 1981, is for students of ages 6 to 16. Between 55 and 65 students attend the 5-week day camp, which is held on the beautiful 46-acre campus of The Bedford School in Fairburn, GA. Campers participate in an individualized academic program as well as recreational activities.
Students receive academic instruction in the areas of reading, reading comprehension, math, auditory discrimination and writing skills through a variety of structured, multi-sensory techniques and materials. Classes, which are grouped by age and skill level, do not require the students to keep up with materials or do outside work; therefore, campers work on improving their academic skills in a stress-free environment. Recreational activities include swimming, team games, Challenge Course elements and a variety of other games and activities. Each age group also participates in an overnight campout on the school grounds, which includes a cookout, swimming and various group activities.
Dr. Betsy Box started Squirrel Hollow in 1981 and serves as its Director. The staff includes several Bedford School teachers as well as carefully selected and trained college and high school tutors. Through involvement with this concerned, qualified staff, students improve not only in academics, but also in self-esteem and social skills. Students often make significant academic gains by learning in small-group, highly structured setting. The goal of Squirrel Hollow is to help each student maximize his or her potential. This is accomplished by structured materials and techniques, organized activities and a dedicated staff.
