Camp Sturtevant is located at 3,200 feet elevation, atop the headwaters of the Big Santa Anita Canyon. When it was first established in the 1890’s, people came on the trolley to Sierra Madre, hiked all the way to the top of Mt. Wilson (5,700’) and then down the Sturtevant Trail into camp. Meanwhile, the lower canyon around Sturtevant Falls was also being developed, but it was not until 1916 that a trail was extended along the stream up the canyon into Camp. The trailhead for this canyon hike has been Chantry Flats, located at the end of Santa Anita Avenue, three miles up the twisty road above Sierra Madre. From Chantry, the canyon trail has been the main access to the canyon and the Camp for the past 85 years.
