De Colores Spanish Summer Camp

1335 Guerrerro St
San Francisco, CA 94110

Katherine Michiels School is offering two summer camps. DE COLORES is our Spanish Language and Latino Culture immersion camp that puts the fun back into learning a language. De Colores changes the model from language instruction to language construction! Many children have received ten years of language instruction by the time they leave high school, yet most lack the basic skills needed to converse, understand and feel confident speaking in Spanish. Real confidence doesn't arise from desk-learning, but from being immersed in a culture that speaks the language. De Colores' location, in the heart of The Mission District, allows for real-life experience of the Spanish language. Using The Mission as our teacher, students will learn by doing, venturing into the neighborhood daily to practice their speaking, listen to real conversations, and see the language written before them. The range of activities campers do in De Colores is as broad as it is FUN. They might take creative movement classes or build drums and shakers to play at camp performances. In the past, they have played futbol, swam in the local piscina, joined neighborhood activities at parks, planned a Mexican meal using traditional ingredients, gone on field trips to mercados, galerias, and museos. All of this happens at the same time that they learn conversation basics and pertinent vocabulary. DREAM YOUR DREAM SUMMER This year KMS has designed a way for summer camp to be extra awesome — let campers collectively plan and choose the activities they've always wanted to do in and around San Francisco. Open to ages 5-11, campers will "Dream Up" the kind of summer that excites them most. This is a rare opportunity to help your child "unplug" this summer and discover their inner "Huckleberry Finn". In alignment with the KMS philosophy of the importance to learn through "being", the summer campers will go out in nature, in neighborhoods, shops, etc. in the city of San Francisco and explore the worlds around them and of their own creation. The focus is on fun, creative expression, searching for great hot weather activities, lots of time for play and lots more. The "Dreaming" includes: Daily themes: individual choice: Outdoor activities: Art, building and gardening activities: Field Trips: Water activities: Camp counselor surprises.
