SUSD to Expand Comprehensive Gifted Program to Hopi Elementary SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (June 8, 2011) Are you looking for an engaging and challenging program for your gifted student? This fall Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is expanding its Comprehensive (Self-Contained) Gifted Program to include Hopi Elementary School for 4th and 5th grade students. Over time, it is the goal of SUSD to develop the program to serve students in the primary grades. “We are excited to expand our Comprehensive Self Contained Gifted program to the Arcadia Learning Community. By expanding the program at Hopi, we will be able to engage our gifted students in rigorous academic learning experiences across the disciplines,” said Dr. Kim Dodds, director of Gifted Services. The Comprehensive Gifted Program offers a complete gifted curriculum and is designed for students who have the extraordinary academic needs, abilities and intellectual potential found in the top three percent of the population. Comprehensive Gifted Program Highlights include: ? Differentiated curriculum and instruction through depth, complexity, acceleration and novelty ? Curriculum compacting ? Enriched, in-depth understanding of the core curriculum ? Development of critical, creative and analytical thinking skills ? Independent Study ? Think Like a Disciplinarian ? Shared Inquiry ? Socratic Method To qualify for the self-contained program, students must meet multiple criteria which include assessments of ability, advanced academic achievement and classroom performance. SUSD offers Comprehensive Gifted Programs at three additional sites, including Redfield Elementary School for 2nd -5th grades, Mohave Middle School for 7th and 8th grades and Desert Canyon Middle School for 6th–8th grades.
