Phoenix Sister Cities Taipei Committee in collaboration with Phoenix Sister Cities, City of Phoenix, City of Taipei, Phoenix Chinese Week, Phoenix Preparatory Academy, and local Chinese Schools successfully completed another season of the inaugural Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp. This is the first year that the Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp partnered with the City of Phoenix, Phoenix Sister Cities, Taipei Committee, and City of Taipei, and we look forward to many more years of cooperation.
The purpose of the Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp is to educate, introduce, and promote understanding of culture and diversity. Students are able to have hands-on experience in numerous areas of traditional Chinese culture, including learning and practicing the skills of Chinese lion dance, Chinese classical and traditional scarf, fan, native, and drum dances, Chinese calligraphy and painting, Chinese paper folding, paper cutting, and paper arts, Chinese arts and crafts, and Chinese kung fu by local instructors. In addition to these wonderful Chinese cultural classes, students are able to learn special talents and skills from instructors from Taipei, Taiwan that especially came to teach students the unique and extraordinary art of Chinese traditional dough arts and Chinese yo-yo techniques. In addition, the splendor, beauty, and magnificence of Taipei videos were played all week for students to understand, experience, and feel the environment of Phoenix's Sister City of Taipei.
Honorable Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Councilman Michael Johnson, and community leaders attended the formal graduation where each student receive a certificate, a trophy and a t-shirt. Also, students showcased and demonstrated their talented performances of breathtaking lion dance, skillful Chinese yo-yo tricks, powerful kung-fu punches and kicks, elegant fan dance, scarf dance, native dance and drum dance and proud displays of students' artistic works of Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional dough arts and creative Chinese arts and crafts. The five-day Taipei Chinese Culture Summer Camp was a tremendous success and we look forward to many more years of participation and partnership.
