Wise Words from Laura Davis and Janis Keyser

September 26, 2008

Sometimes we need a little reminder of the larger purpose of all the endless mediating and listening and explaining and encouraging and comforting we do with our children and their friends.

Here are just the words to make us feel that yes, indeed, it is all very worthwhile:

"Ultimately, we make rules about conduct because we want our children to be compassionate, and we're not sure that compassion evolves naturally. But with support, it does. By bringing children together to talk and listen to each other, and by modeling respect for people's feelings, we give them the message that we eventually expect them to be able to care about other people. In doing so, we help them in becoming responsive, empathetic people."

From a book we can't do without: Becoming the Parent You Want to Be: A Sourcebook of Strategies for the First Five Years.

these words are reassuring, especialy after a long day...my little boy ignored my polite requests to calm down and clean his room before bed...at least, I modeled respect...but he still left his room messy...
