All About Me

By Myself

Jun

Isn't it revealing how the phrase "by myself" can evoke such extreme, contradictory emotions in our little ones? There is, of course, the pride of achievement and self-sufficiency. But there is also the scary feeling of being all alone. "I do it by myself!" your two-year-old will insist, teetering up a steep set of stairs while you shadow her from behind, every step of the way.

What's in a Name? Only Everything!

Jun

So what is in a name, exactly? If a rose can do it, then your little one by any other name would surely also smell as sweet. But no other name could possibly suit him, could it? Whether you knew instantly or agonized for months, you picked a name and now just these few years in, it is inextricably part of your darling's being, herself, her way. And it's also his favorite word. Her favorite

What's the 411 (for Preschoolers)?

Jun

Your little one knows his own name. He loves his name. (See l ast week's post to understand just how much.) He may even know what letter it starts with. MY letter! And does he also know his middle name, and last name too? Yes? Good job, buddy! But what about all the other info? Those basic names and numbers we all have in our heads, and that give us a place in this world to call home, people

Little Hands and Faces

Jun

2008

Before children learn how to draw figures, they love to fingerpaint, and especially to make handprints. If you let them, they'll spend hours slapping their paint covered hands down onto paper, filling pages and pages with smeary imprints of themselves. They never seem to tire of making their own mark. And once they get the hang of drawing faces, many of these little artists move into their

Neither Big nor Little

Jun

We love old-fashioned measures of a child's growth (pencil ticks on a door frame, naturally). We swoon over the rather newer-fashioned eeBoo growth charts that hang in many little rooms we see. But we really adore the other measures out there. The ones that only a mom or dad knows. The ones you can remember even when the details of inches and feet escape your suddenly sieve-like mind.

Doing It My Way

Jun

2008

Our preschoolers have their ways. The way their smiles just beam, The way they sing off key, The way they haunt our dreams.... Ira Gershwin could not have said it better. And then there's the way they like their pb&j's (hardly any "pb," plenty of "j"), the way they like to pick out their own clothes (no pants, only shorts), the way they like to stop and look

I'm a Girl, I'm a Boy -- What Do Gender Differences Mean to Preschoolers?

Jun

2008

We admit to being daunted by this topic. It's kind of huge, and kind of controversial. But we are dedicated to exploring the Me-ness of little people this month, and there's no denying that being able to say "I'm a boy" or "I'm a girl" -- otherwise known as gender identification -- is a big part of how the preschoolers we know understand themselves. Interestingly enough, being able to

Keeping a Journal with Young Kids

Jun
23
2008

As we've been musing about all month, young children have a tremendous desire to learn about themselves, and an almost limitless capacity for introspection. They are just enthralled with their own small selves -- and, developmentally, they are supposed to be. At the same time, we, their lucky parents, desperately want to keep as many reminders as possible of these ever changing little

Getting to Know My Neighborhood

Jun
24
2008

We've been planning all month to write this post today about how much young children enjoy getting to know their neighborhoods and befriending their neighbors. The topic of preschoolers and neighborhoods makes us think -- how could it not? -- of Mister Rogers and his unforgettable song " Won't You Be My Neighbor? " (If you haven't heard this in a while, do click through and listen via the

These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

Jun

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Um, not quite. It seems that our preschoolers are a bit fiercer in their approach to favorite things. Brown paper packages tied up with string, sure. Those are always cherished. But the rest of the list devolves from there. Maria never yodeled with kids who insist on only dark pink sparkly tiaras or the same green dumptruck tee, day in and day
