Holiday Preschooler Parties and Events Around Town

December 09, 2008

Have you been reckless enough to invite a bunch of preschoolers over to your house for a holiday get-together? Or did you impulsively volunteer to organize your preschool's December party?

In case the prospect is sending you into a slight panic, Being Savvy has a few tried and true ideas for a happy, easy holiday party for small kids. The truth is, the preschool crowd is pretty easy to please, so there's no need for anything too elaborate other than good friends and a few of the following activities:

  • Caroling is always a hit with the little ones. Many of them may know the words to "Rudolf" or "Jingle Bells," but it's also worth putting together a song sheet with lyrics to your other holiday favorites so that the adults in the crowd can serenade the children -- they love it!
  • In an eco- and wallet-friendly twist on Secret Santa, ask each guest to wrap up and bring a toy from home that they no longer play with much. Put all the gifts in a basket, and at the appointed time, let each child pick a present.
  • Have the kiddos decorate sugar cookies or gingerbread men. Bake the cookies ahead of time and provide plenty of frosting and sprinkles and raisins and other decorative treats. (This always keeps the children busy and cheerful!)
And if you and your little ones can't get enough of all the festivities, our Savvy City Editors are here to let you know about the best of holiday fun in their towns.

My boy is not quite a toddler, but a good suggestion for a moms group holiday theme: cookie swap! everybody bakes their favorite cookies and then everyone goes home with some of each kind! yum yum

We had the kids bring a plain t-shirt or one w/ a stain on it and had fabric paint. They all got to paint their shirts, some with help.

All three of the littles (6,5, and 2) love decorating sugar cookies and the 14 yr old doesn't mind supervising and taste testing ;)

This year, I let my daughter and a few of her friends go to town with a bag of spice drops and some toothpicks. They stayed busy for a good while creating people, geometric shapes, and little villages. (You could incorporate many different kinds of candy)

This time of the year, I really look forward to our annual cookie exchange with several of my college roommates. It's been ages since we've gone our separate ways with families of our own now, but we do enjoy coming together for this annual tradition. With 3 varieties of cookies (recipes too), we bring our treats for swapping. So we adults can enjoy catching up, we keep the kids busy with cookies to decorate as well as a couple of gingerbread houses. Oh, what fun & delight! Not just the decorating, but even more the relationships that are growing out of our kids' time together. What a party & what memories!

We are all over the Christmas cookie decorating - my kids love it. Caroling is a great idea too, I bet they would love that!

Looks like everyone is having fun! :) Caroling has always been a big tradition in our family...complete with homemade chimes and jingle bells, etc. This year our moms group's party is this week...we're making snowglobes from baby food jars and miniature ornaments. We'll see how it goes! My baking has not been 'on' this year (we live in a hot area) but maybe I'll have to get something going sometime.

I'm getting into cookie backing, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, and decorating the Christmas tree with my 2 1/2 year old. He still does not seem quite old enough to really "get" Christmas but he enjoys each individual activity...for as long as a 2 1/2 year old can sit still!

We had my son's playgroup holiday party at a local family fun center with trampolines. They ate snacks, made snowman ornaments for the tree and literally bounced off the walls for a few hours! Lindley- linjenals at yahoo dot com
