More Than Numbers: Toys to Introduce Matching, Patterns and Sequences

February 05, 2009

There's more to math than 1, 2, 3, and thank goodness because all of the other stuff is what makes it really fun for the little ones. Many of the simple, brilliant toys that best absorb children's attention are the very ones that fire up their mathematical engines. Here are a few gems we highly recommend!

Matching Colors and Textures Puzzles
by Infantino
The very notion that certain things match and others don't, that some things are the same and others are different is a mathematical one. It's also the basis for a really fun and satisfying game for little ones. Two-year-olds will be feel especially proud of themselves as they figure these lovely puzzles out. A wonderful pastime and a great gift!

Pattern Blocks and Boards
by Melissa & Doug
Here is a brain-teaser and hours of fun for preschoolers all wrapped into one clever toy. Children match the pattern blocks to the shapes and designs of the ten boards included in the set. Preschoolers are really absorbed by this doable challenge!

Bead Sequencing Set
by Melissa & Doug
Learning to copy patterns and sequences is a big part of preschool pre-math, and don't you know, quite fascinating to the preschool set! Especially when they get to create new baubles for themselves to parade around in while they're at it.
