Best Things About Going On Vacation; Best Parts About Coming Home

July 08, 2008

Perhaps you've noticed that we are a trifle obsessed with going on vacation around here. And we suspect that you are too. But really, how could we not be? Summertime with kids just calls out for a trip, an escape, a vacation, a quest, as Chevy Chase would say, "a quest for fun." (Yes, we are quoting that immortal film, "Vacation." Forgive us.)  Why do we long so to leave home?

Since we're in Tuesday List mode today, we present to you:

The 5 Best Things About Going on Vacation

Leaving it all behind: the mail (hurray for neighbors who pick up your mail!); the phone (bye, bye, pesky telemarketers!); the schedules (keep the kids up late, sleep in, go crazy!); the endless round of school, work, playgrounds, classes, playdates, groceries and errands (phew!).

Paring your stuff down to one suitcase per person (it's not easy, but feels so good).

Watching your kids grow leaps and bounds as they see different sights, eat different foods, spend time with different people, and try new activities.

Feeling closer as a family because you're having an adventure together.

Gaining a new appreciation for the comforts of home -- which brings us to....

The 5 Best Parts About Coming Home

Old toys seem like new (how brilliant is that?).

Not having to live out of suitcases (yeah for plenty of clean laundry!).

Running into friends and neighbors, and telling them all about your trip.

Going to get a bite at your favorite local restaurant.

Climbing into your own cozy, comfy bed and remembering your lovely vacation as you drift off (bliss!).

Happy vacations and homecomings, everyone!

What a great list. We just got back from vacation and sure enough it was so nice to go to bed late, have no time to get up by and most of all be together all day as a family. It was a challenge getting back into somewhat of a routine but for the most part, vacations are wonderful!!
