Leaving the Shore Behind
August 30, 2008
We've enjoyed our month down by the shore so much. We hope you did too. What fun we had splashing and mucking around with the little ones!
With Labor Day weekend upon us (too soon!), we're looking back fondly on all the great times:
We gloried in the joys of playing with water and sand.
We got really good at packing for a perfect day at a preschooler-perfect beach.
We immersed ourselves in books about adventures at sea.
We frolicked with the mermaids, and ran roughshod with the pirates.
We took the kids fishing.
We belted out sea chanteys.
We played our favorite beach games, all the while keeping the children safe from sun burns with our favorite sun protection tips.
We visited aquariums, real and virtual, to see the fish, and learned all about marine biology from the preschool perspective.
We got crafty with all of the rocks and shells the kids picked up at the shore.
We read and reread the wonderful books about the Maine coast by Robert McCloskey.
We gazed at the constellations on a starry night.
We thought hard about water safety, and got our kids started learning to swim.
We had a blast getting wet and wild in the backyard.
We were inspired and renewed by wise words about the wonders of water from Marilynne Robinson, Isak Dinesen, John Masefield, e.e. cummings, and Rachel Carson.
We enjoyed the fantastic company of fellow beach-lovers and guest bloggers CityMama, Jen of Oneplustwo, Jason Avant of Dad Centric, Nora of Nonlineargirl, and the ever inspiring Ginger Carlson.
We're sad to be leaving the shore -- how could we not be? But September and back-to-preschool season are always exciting -- we get to see all of our friends, little and big, again. Can't wait!
