Sea chanteys (or shanties, if you'd like to introduce your preschooler early to the world variant spellings) are easy-to-remember, easy-to-belt-out songs that help pass the time when you are manning the sails or pulling the oars.  Or just sitting in traffic to get across town.

Here are some of our favorites for your little pirates, mermaids or confirmed landlubbers:
  • At the Bottom of the Sea by Ralph's World (though the rest of the album after the title track detours fairly far inland, it's still fun)
  • the absolutely fantastic lullabies of Down at the Sea Hotel, which also goes landlocked after a few songs, but by then your little one is headed to dreamland, so it hardly matters.
What does your crew like to sing?

My son belts out, "Down by the sea, where the watermelons grow, back to my home. I dare not go....everytime we drive by the ocean." It cracks my up!
