Dump a bag of M&Ms on the table and ask your child to sort them into different piles, by color. Then ask her to create vertical lines to show, without counting, which color has the most M&M's. You can add to the game by asking other questions such as: Which line has more M&Ms, blue or red? Which line has the least? After she has predicted the answers using her m&s "graphs," ask her to count each to be sure the answers are correct. You can also add and subtract using M&M's as manipulatives. For younger children, sorting and color recognition would be appropriate.
Materials Needed: M&M's, paper (if you want to record answers), flat surface
Ages: 2-6 year olds
Very good activity. Can be modified to use any candy or such items as buttons, marbles if prefer not to use candy.
