Create a fun, portable flannel board for your next road trip or doctor's office visit. To begin, cover the top of a shoe box with felt, secure the felt underneath with glue, staples, or a hot glue gun. This will form the base of the flannel board. Next, create the play pieces. Cut pieces of flannel into various sizes and shapes, such as animals, cars, people, circles, squares, or triangles. These will all fit inside the box, creating a completely portable toy. A fun thing to do with your flannel board is to cut out pieces that will go along with your child's favorite story. Then you and your child can "act out" the story with the flannel board.
Materials Needed: Cardboard shoe box, felt, scissors, glue or stapler, flannel
Ages: 2-5 year olds
What a wonderful idea. To carry this activity a little further, ask your child to tell you a story as she/he creates it. For older elementary kids, have them tell you the beginning, middle and end to the story they created.

This is a good activity if you're savvy with scissors.

This is a great idea for car trips. We always have problems with my son dropping his books and toys while in his car seat. The flannel pieces will stick to the board and cannot roll or fall off. Felt would also work and would not ravel. New shapes could be added every so often to keep the game fresh!
