Making a Piggy Bank

Supplies

Coffee can with lid, pink felt, markers, glue, scissors

Activity Detail

Make a piggy bank out of an empty coffee can. Begin by gluing pink felt around the can. Then, help your child to add googly eyes to the front -- or draw eyes on with a marker -- and glue two small felt triangles to the top of the can to serve as ears. Cut a slit in the plastic top for the coins to be inserted. This is a great way to get your child started saving his or her pennies.

My kids had more fun with this activity when they were able to choose their own option for decorating. We ended up with one froggy bank and one garden bank. For the frog we used green craft foam, googly eyes and a long red balloon for the tongue. The garden bank was created from extra fake flowers and leaves we had around, which we adhered to the container with a supervised glue gun. While we made our banks we talked about how we would earn money to put in them. Then we made a list of chores outside of our regular ones that we would pay an allowance for. We also discussed what we might purchase with our money or where we would donate it.
