Homemade Playdough -- No Cooking Required!

ages 2-6

Supplies

Flour, salt, water, vegetable oil, food coloring

Activity Detail

Into a large bowl, put 3 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 2 tablespoons of warm water, and 1 and 1/2 cups vegetable oil. Knead all ingredients together and form into balls (this is a great sensory development skill for younger children). Then gently work in a few drops of food coloring to create colored playdough. You can mix colors together to teach children about using primary colors to create secondary colors. When you're done playing, store the playdough in an airtight container for another day.

Comments

Children love to follow a "recipe" and help.

You can even use this activity to move beyond secondary colors to tertiary ones -- magenta, violet, chartreuse, etc.
