Tall Tales for Your Toddler

ages 1-6


Activity Detail

Try just starting a story in a quiet-ish moment. It can be a total non sequitur, no moral, no point, no lesson. Look at your little one and start with 'Did I ever tell you about ...' and just take it from there. The funny cat that used to live next door to us, the day we moved into this house, the first time I met your father, etc. And of course, since there is no topic more compelling to our little ones than themselves, you could always go with the day we brought you home from the hospital or the first time you ate baby food or something like that. Just start talking. It's amazing, flat out amazing, how much they like listening to just a story.

This is something I think most of us, as parents do as a matter of course -- though perhaps I am taking that for granted. Especially as my (almost 5-year old) son has gotten older, he loves to hear stories about what my life and that of his father's was like before he was born, or reminiscences of things he did or went through when he was "younger."

My grandfather used to tell us stories that were improvised about "brownie the mouse." I never will understand where his inspiration came from but those tales were amazing, and always funny. I can't remember any in particular and I don't think they really always had a point but I used to love just spending the time with him. He made ordinary stories come alive.
