Create Your Own Songs
ages 3-6
Supplies
Just your creative juices!
Activity Detail
Bring out the songwriter in your child. Choose a simple tune you know well (i.e. "Jingle Bells" or "Mary Had a Little Lamb") and make up new words to the song. The songs don't have to make sense or be "good"; this is just about having fun and singing! You can choose a theme like encouraging rhyming skills or phonics (i.e. make a song up with as many "G" words as you can) or just let your child sing about anything he or she wants to. Let your little one take the lead and see what he or she comes up with. You'll be amazed at how great the songs will be. It's also a great way to see what your child's thinking about at that moment. Don't forget your video camera to catch the fun!

We do this with our son already and he enjoys it. He also gets a kick out of changing the words to his favorite books.

This is one of my girls favorite activities. Even if I don't get the rendition on camera, I try to jot down the gems they come up with.
