Inside Out Science

ages 2-6

Flowers or plants

Activity Detail

Science isn't just projects, it's everywhere. My kids enjoy learning about things by taking them apart to see what's inside. Collect a few flowers and examine them together. Talk about their texture, take them apart carefully so you can see how they're made. Squish them in your hands to feel how much moisture is inside. Try this with different kinds of flowers. Seeds work well, too.

This activity is certainly a fun, easy way to apply science to the world around us. I would recommend doing this activity with children 4 and over...as they might be tempted to "eat" the item being examined!

After taking apart flowers, you can press or swipe the petals and other parts onto white paper and "draw" pictures with the pollen. I also use this activity as a chance to remind my kids that an adult needs to supervise and approve picking flowers and touching plants that are unfamiliar to them.

Children are experimenting all of the time. I try to point out when they are acting like a scientist on their own and discovering new things.
