Capture the Moment
Sometimes when a child is feeling intense emotions -- happy or sad -- drawing a picture can help her to identify the emotions and talk about them. A drawing of an especially good experience will help your child to remember the event and how it made her feel. A drawing of something that made her sad or angry will help her to talk it through. One time, my daughter wanted to eat at her favorite restaurant and her father told her no. She was very upset by this but was having a hard time putting her emotions into words. When she got home, she drew a picture of the inside of the restaurant, and outside of the restaurant's front windows, she drew our car with her crying in the backseat and her father smiling as he drove past. When he saw the picture, he understood her feelings and she was able to talk in concrete terms about what she felt.
