Simon Says

ages 3-6

Activity Detail

Simon Says is a great way to teach close listening skills. In case it's been a while since you've played, here's a refresher: Stand opposite from your child (or group of children) and give them different tasks to do -- stand on one foot, tap your nose with your finger, spin around. The catch is that the task can be performed only if you add "Simon Says" (e.g. Simon says stand on one foot). Be sure to throw in a non-Simon Says task every couple of tasks to trip up the non-listeners. They'll be sure to listen more closely the next time they play the game!

Not at all original, but I'm glad I was reminded of it to play with my son.

For younger kids, sometimes just giving them rapid commands, without the "Simon" rule, is fun, too. I have often done this to keep hands busy in a public restroom, when I am unable to physically keep them from touching all the germy stuff.
