Make Your Own Candle Holders

ages 4-6

Baby food jars, washed and label removed; colored sand (a few different colors); short candles

Activity Detail

A really fun colorful activity is to make your own candle holders. You'll need baby food jars, colored sand, aluminum foil, and short tapered candles. Put different colored sand into small measuring cups that the kids can pour. Have the kids pour in one color at a time so they get a layered effect. Cut a small piece of foil in a circle a little bigger than the jar lip. Cut a small hole in the center of the foil to fit the candle through. Push candle through foil and into the sand and wrap the edges of the foil around the jar (the foil catches the candle drippings). Fun party favor activity or just a fun craft to do with the kids.

Good idea for older children too.

This activity definitely demands constant supervision unless you want sand all over your house. Also, if you don't happen to have colored sand, you can "color" regular sand with colored chalk, which is what they do at my son's preschool--just pour some sand onto a paper plate and rub hard with colored chalk. This is nice too, because it becomes an activity in and of itself. Since you need to rub pretty hard, this is best reserved for older kids.
