'Word of the Day' Jar

ages 3-6

Large jar, markers, paper

Activity Detail

Expand your child's vocabulary! Create a 'Word of the Day' Jar for your house. Decorate a large jar in any way you want -- glued-on tissue paper, construction paper, stickers, etc. You can encourage your child to practice his or her letters by dressing up the jar with various letters of the alphabet! Once it's decorated, fill the jar up with all sorts of words written on paper and put the definition on the back. Older children can practice their handwriting skills by writing the words and definitions themselves. Have your child start off the day by picking a word from the jar. Read the word and its definition and help your child make up a sentence using the word. Cleverly use the word throughout the day, and see if your child catches on!

This is a great activity to work vocabulary into the day. You can expand upon the "Word of the Day" in lots of ways including writing the word using magnetic fridge letters that we all seem to have!

This is a clever idea - my son loves words and has a huge vocabulary for his age, but I will still try it!
