Colorful Cupcake Decorating

ages 2-6

Cake mix (and ingredients to make the cake), cupcake foils, whipped style frosting, food coloring, sprinkles or candy for decorating

Activity Detail

Kids really love this activity. You and your child can begin by baking a batch of cupcakes as you usually would (using a simple cake mix is the easiest). Make the cupcakes nice and big so that the children can hold on to them for easier decorating. Take a container of ready-made frosting (whipped is the easiest to spread) and divide it up into four small bowls. In each bowl, mix in a small amount of red, blue, green, or yellow food coloring. Give the child a small spoon and show them how to use the back of the spoon to spread the frosting over the cupcakes. They can then decorate with sprinkles or candy once they are finished frosting.
