Serving Up Smoothies

ages 1-6

Low-fat yogurt or whole milk yogurt, milk, water, fresh or frozen fruits

Activity Detail

Going to the store to pick out fruit ingredients for making smoothies. My favorite recipe is to add two cups of milk to a blender, and to that add 1/2 cup of strawberries, 1 or 2 sliced bananas, and 1/2 cup of yogurt. It is so tasty, and the kids drink it so fast. Kids love to see all the fruit they chose being transformed into a smoothie. The great thing about it for me is that my kids get their two servings of dairy and three servings of fruit in one tasty treat.

I think this is a great way to encourage children to select fresh fruits for snacking. Spending time in the produce section of the grocery store is always a great activity!

At our house, we even add some green veggies (peas, kale, etc.) to the smoothie. The sweetness of the fruit and yogurt totally masks the flavor of the veggies.

Thanks for the great recipe! I've been looking for ways to sneak more fruits into my picky eater's diet.
