Patriotic Cheese Balls

ages 2-6

Supplies

Vanilla, cream cheese, powdered sugar, dash of salt, coconut, red and blue food coloring, platter, refrigerator

Activity Detail

Beat 3 oz. cream cheese and 2 and 1/2 cups of powdered sugar until smooth. Beat in 1/4 tsp. vanilla and a dash of salt. Mix well. Grab your kids and have them help you form balls with the mixture. Next, separate a bag of coconut into three bowls. Make one bowl the white coconut; the second the red coconut by adding red food coloring; and the third blue coconut by adding blue food coloring. Roll each cream cheese ball in a different color of coconut. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Place on platter in a red, white, blue pattern. Happy 4th of July!

I like the idea behind this activity and think most kids would enjoy the process of making the cheese balls and turning the coconut different colors. However, I am not sure how many kids would actually eat the finished result since coconut is a bit iffy for a lot of kids. That said, some kids may be lured into trying these cheese balls just because they are different colors.
