Chinese Paper Lantern

ages 4-6

1 piece of yellow paper; clear tape; 1 sheet of red paper; scissors; string

Activity Detail

To celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival, roll a piece of yellow paper length-wise, forming a cylinder, and tape it together. Fold a piece of red paper in half width-wise. Cut the folded end of the red paper in strips, about one-half inch apart, stopping about an inch from the end of the paper. Open the red paper, wrap the uncut ends around the yellow cylinder, and tape it on. Hang the lantern with a string.

This is a fun craft that can be done every year when they are young.

While working on the activity, talk to your kids about the origins of the lantern and the significance of the lantern festival. Making the lantern will help solidify the "history lesson"!
