Clean Water Ducks
Tub, water, plastic ducks, dirt, empty water bottles, oil
Fill a clear plastic tub with water. The tub should hold at least 2 gallons of water, but a plastic pool could also be used. Place several plastic ducks in the water. Explain to your child that the tub or pool represents a lake, where the ducks live. Place several empty plastic water bottles in the tub with the ducks. Talk with your child about what happens when people throw their litter into the lake. The ducks no longer have a clean place to live. You can also add some dirt or oil to the water, and have your child experiment with removing the dirt and oil. They can try using a net, sponge, or cup. This activity is a wonderful way to discuss the importance of keeping our lakes clean for wildlife.
