Measure with Me

ages 3-6

Piece of yarn, scissors

Activity Detail

Which things in the house are taller than your child and which are shorter? Help her find out by cutting a length of yarn to her height and then "measuring" pieces of furniture, large toys, etc. to see which are shorter than her and which are taller. You can make this a game by writing down several household items on a piece of paper and having your child guess ahead of time whether she thinks it will be taller or shorter than her. Write down the guesses, and then see whether they were right as you work through your measurements. Learning to measure is an important skill for older preschoolers and kindergarteners. This activity is a great way to practice and have fun!

After the game is over, hang the string somewhere in your child's room. Next time you play the game, see how much longer the new string is than last time you played!
