Dr. Seuss Hats

ages 2-6

White paper, red paint, paint brush, white paper plates, hole puncher, yarn, stapler

Activity Detail

Celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday by making Cat in the Hat hats. Take a 9x13 piece of white paper and have your child paint red horizontal stripes. Let dry. Meanwhile, cut out the circle part of a paper plate. Punch a hole on each side of the plate and string red yarn through the holes (these will be the ties that hold the hat on). The plate should be face down and the strings hanging down. Once the paint is dry, cut small cuts across the bottom of the red-striped paper about 1-2" apart. Roll the paper loosely to fit in the circle of the plate fitting the cut side through the opening of the plate. Fold the flaps that you cut onto the plate and staple or tape to hold in place. Place on child's head and tie under his/her chin. Now, grab your copy of The Cat in the Hat and sit down with your little one for a good -- and interactive -- read!

Dr. Seuss is universally loved by kids everywhere so this is a great idea. My son made something similar in preschool. However, I found the directions for this activity, with regards to the section about the paper plate sort of difficult to follow and I had to re-read it a few times to figure out how to proceed.
