Which One is Different?

Supplies

Small toys or objects that can be made into groups of two or three

Activity Detail

Gather several similar small toys or objects that can be made into groups of two or three items which are alike (for example, three leaves). Then, add an additional item that is not related to the group in any way (for example, add a rubber duck to the group of leaves). Ask your child to identify which items are the same and which one is different, or does not belong.

As the parent of a kindergartner who has already taken a couple standardized tests in which similar type questions were posted, I think this is a great idea. It's a good, non-threatening way to get kids thinking along these lines before they actually have to begin test-taking. I am not sure how much a 2 year old would be able to truly participate in this activity, but it's definitely great for older in the 4-6 year old range!
