Paintbrush, dark colored construction paper, Epsom salt, water, food coloring or liquid tempera paint
Activity Detail
Directions for making Crystal Paint: Combine 1 cup Epsom salt with 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Add a few drops of food coloring or liquid tempera paint to make different colors. Be sure to mix the paint well and store in a small jar. Using the Crystal Paint, have your child paint a winter scene onto a piece of dark construction paper. When it dries, the painting will have a "frosty" or icy look to it. Perfect indoor craft for your next snowy day!

This activity is generally a good one, but I was confused about the specifics. I wasn't sure how many colors I could make with the salt base or how I was supposed to proceed once that part was made. Was this base just enough for one color?

This could be a fun activity for a group of children...especially if they are in an area where it doesn't fall. By using a strip of butcher paper, you could create an indoor mural! How about doing this activity in the middle of summer...A Winter in July activity!
