Finding Buried Treasure

ages 2-6

Supplies

Small rocks, gold spray paint, a box filled with dirt or sand, small shovels or sifters from your beach toy bucket

Activity Detail

Have you noticed that little kids love sparkly items? With this activity your child can pretend to be a pirate searching for lost treasure or an archaeologist searching for ancient artifacts. Take some little rocks and spray paint them gold. Older children can "help" with this part of the activity. Then bury the "treasure" in a box of sand. Give your child a small shovel or sifter and have them begin the search!

Be sure items are not choking hazards for young kids.

You can also use little toys like bugs or cars or plastic rings so they think they are finding treasure.

My son LOVES to dig with various shovels, rakes, hoes, etc. How much more fun would he have if he actually found something in all that digging?! You could also bury small plastic animals or pennies.

You could also create "gems" by spraying some rocks with other colors such as blue and red.

We did this activity and it was a ton of fun. We didn't use spray paint, though. We used some old paints that we had lying around from an old craft kit and glitter glue.
