Go Fish!

ages 2-4

Supplies

Construction paper, scissors, paper clips, small ring magnet, string, yardstick

Activity Detail

Create a fishing pond for your toddler. With your child, cut out several paper fish from construction paper and attach a paper clip to each fish. Then tie a string to one of end of the fishing pole (yardstick or other rod) and a magnet to the other end of the string. Your child can lay out the fish on the floor and go fishing by trying to touch the magnet to the fish's paper clip. Kids love it when they 'catch' the fish!

Other Savvy parents recommend fishing not just for fish, but also pictures that you cut out of magazines. You could put pictures (with paper clips on the end, just like the fish) of babies, trees, giraffes, apples, cars, etc. into your "pond" and then give your kids directions like "Find something with a long neck." You can accumulate a collection of pictures and create themed "ponds," as well.

As an added challenge, you can make each fish a different color, decorate it with a different shape, letter number or word. That way when your kids "catch" their fish they can practice some identification skills in the process!

It's also fun to let the kids decorate the fish and to create different kids of fish for the pond (a shark, an octopus, a clownfish, etc.).
