'I Spy' Bottles

Supplies
Empty two-liter plastic bottle with cap, rice or beans, 5-10 small toys or trinkets
Activity Detail
Remove the wrapper from a two-liter plastic bottle. Insert 5-10 'I Spy' trinkets (penny, marble, plastic figures, bottle cap, etc.). After inserting the trinkets, fill the bottle three-quarters of the way to the top with beans or rice. Tell your child how many 'I Spy' items are in the bottle. Your kids will delight in shaking and turning the bottle to find all the different things!

This activity was more fun than I anticipated it would be. My kids were so into it they immediately thought of other things to put into the bottles…little figurines, coins, even miniature pictures of friends and families made their way into our "I Spy" collection.

You could also use a smaller container - like a small square of fabric that you sew together (with a plastic window in the middle) - to take with you on planes and long car rides. Some stores sell these for about $20, but I think it would be easy and fun to make your own. If you use a zipper, you can switch out the toys frequently to keep it interesting.

Toddlers can enjoy the I Spy bottle as a noisemaker...just be sure the lid is on tight.

Kids who love the "I Spy" series of books will love this activity. Older children have fun creating a bottle for you to look in.

We made one for a kid's halloween party with baby food jars. I found little halloween shaped candies and little ghosts and pumpkins to put in the rice. We had little labels on the top for names too! It was so much fun!!
