Mixed-Up Words
ages 3-6
Activity Detail
This game requires that your child know at least some of the consonant sounds from the alphabet. Start by choosing an object (for example, a table), then substitute the first letter with another one (maybe a 'P'). Say the result, 'pable,' and see if your child can guess which object you're talking about. When they guess correctly, it's your child's turn. If they can't guess it, try something else with the same letter substitution (window becomes 'pindow' for example). Keep subsituting the same letter until your child figures out the pattern. You can vary the difficulty depending on your child's ability. More advanced kids can guess combination sounds like 'ch' 'sl' or 'qu.'

You could alter this activity if you chose words that rhyme with numbers. For instance, "What number rhymes with Tree"....answer is 3 !

This is an excellent game to teach pre-reading skills. As your child progresses, they can turn the tables and create the words for you.
